SSDs or Solid State Drives, Are they worth the money?
SSD drives use non-volatile NAND flash memory, which means they have no moving parts inside them as traditional HDDs do. Since they have no actuator arm or read/write head, they are much faster in reading the data and sometimes writing it as well.
Like all new technologies, SSDs are much more expensive then the traditional HDDs. The cost of SSDs is around $3 per gigabit when the traditional HDDs are around $.20-$.30 per gigabit. So as you can see, the is a large price gap between the new SSDs and traditional HDDs. Current market researchers agree that this price gap will be evident even 5 years from now.
So it always goes back to the same question, what are you going to use your computer for? If speed is essential to your computing needs, then SSDs would be your choice. If size of disk space is essential to your computing needs, then HDDs would be your choice. |
