IT Security remains a top concern

For any company that works with networked computers - which these days, is basically all of them - security should be a chief concern. Information is the lifeblood of a business, and if it's not kept carefully protected, the consequences could be dire.

This concept is becoming widely embraced across difference organizations. PwC recently performed its annual Global State and Information Security survey, the results strongly indicated the importance of these concerns: after polling nearly 10,000 executives from more than 100 countries, PwC founds that 66 percent reported that employee and/or customer records had been compromised. In addition, 29 percent faced an internal record lost and 23 percent had to deal with identity theft.

All told, security-related problems are up 25 percent over last year, with an increased financial cost of 18 percent.

"You can't fight today's threats with yesterday's strategies," Gary Loveland, PwC Principal, said in the report. "What's needed is a new model of information security, one that is driven by knowledge of threats, assets, and the motives and targets of potential adversaries."

These effects don't discriminate based on company size, either: businesses as large as Target and as small as local mom and pop stores have been hit with security breaches. The major difference, of course, is that giant businesses can usually absorb this sort of financial risk: for a smaller outfit, the impact to the bottom line could be too much.

However, achieving better information safety doesn't have to be a daunting task. With the help of a managed service provider, any organization, no matter the size, can have the security of knowing its information is safe.
